Chicano Park

Chicano Park was birthed in 1970, by the communal resistance to injustices of a community oppressed by junkyards and industrial factories that polluted their community. In 1970, the community of Barrio Logan had a simple request to build a park where their children and families could play. The murals of Chicano Park depict the rich history, struggles, resilience and hopes of Mexican Americans and Chicanos.

Chicano Park is a national historic landmark in San Diego California. It houses the largest collection of Chicano murals in the world. In 1997, Berenice Badillo who was twenty three at the time painted  “Mural in Chicana Park” during a time where mural painting was not allowed due to Caltrans wanting to destroy the murals to make them earthquake safe. In 2024, the mural was restored and extended seventy feet by Badillo and XoQue art in motion.
